Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research
The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (LICR) is the largest international academic institute dedicated exclusively to understanding and controlling cancer; with 43 laboratory and clinical sites in 15 countries.
The LICR Melbourne-Austin Branch located at Austin Health, is the principal translational and clinical research site for LICR global programs.
Laboratory research focuses on cancer immunology, antibody-based therapeutics, signalling pathways in cancer, epigenetics of cancer, and tumour biology.
The Cancer Vaccine Program and the Tumour Targeting Program explore cancer vaccines, targeted antibodies, and small molecule inhibitors. These targeted therapies are designed to prevent the growth of tumours and the spread of cancer, without the dangerous and unpleasant side effects of current cancer therapies.
Clinical oncology involvement is achieved through the unique joint arrangements with Austin Health in Medical Oncology and Positron Emission Tomography. Accordingly, senior LICR Melbourne-Austin research staff are actively involved in the treatment and care of patients with cancer and conduct clinical trials exploring novel cancer therapies.
The LICR is a founding partner in the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre, and the Melbourne-Austin Branch will expand into new research facilities within the Centre to build on and enhance the research programs.
The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre will enhance collaboration between scientists and clinicians.
The Centre will provide new and increased opportunities for cancer research to improve cancer treatments and patient outcomes through LICR’s global integrated programs that translate basic laboratory discoveries into patient benefits through conducting its own clinical trials.
"I’m immensely proud of what we are contributing to cancer research and therapy. We are making pivotal advances in the exploration of ‘targeted therapies’ – antibodies, therapeutic cancer vaccines and small molecule inhibitors – designed specifically to attack only cancer cells, to ensure the greatest efficacy and minimal side effects. The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre will be an integral component of our research."
Professor Jonathan Cebon. Head of Joint Austin / Ludwig Oncology Unit, Australia. Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre Appeal Executive.
