Music Therapy
Wellness programs
What is music therapy?
Music Therapy is the planned and creative use of music to attain and maintain health and wellbeing. It utilises the properties and potential of music and its impact on the human being, either as a form of psychosocial and spiritual support, or as an adjunct intervention strategy to symptom management and nursing care.
Music therapy can address physical, psychological, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals, within a therapeutic relationship.
People of any age or ability may benefit from a music therapy program, regardless of musical skill or background.
Goals of Music Therapy
Quality of Life: For many people music is an essential component of ‘Quality of Life’. It can readily access the psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families. We all use music to moderate our moods and create ambience in our lives every day. People with life threatening illnesses need these same opportunities.
Life Review: In the Palliative Care Unit, as life draws to a close, many patients and their families benefit from the opportunity to look back and reminisce about aspects of their life. Music, particularly popular songs, is a powerful tool that can accelerate and enhance this process.
Music Therapy Methods
A variety of musical methods are currently used with patients and families at the Palliative Care Unit, including song writing, listening to music, music and imagery, singing and playing, relaxation techniques, song choice and discussion and improvisation.
What can music therapy achieve for patients?
Music has the capacity to give opportunities for choice and control, fulfilling emotional and spiritual needs, opportunities to connect with others in a meaningful way, empowerment, relief of stress, stimulation of positive feelings, enjoyment and to create a peaceful and tranquil space for the end of life.
"Our mother received the wonderful care of your very special ward last year, prior to her death in April. On different occasions, I remember the care provided by the music therapist, and how fantastic it was. I fondly remember one morning in particular. Mum, another patient, my sister and I were singing along with [music therapist] John and he entertained and engaged us all. I had the realisation at that time, that whatever difficulties you are facing, somehow music can be a simple, immediate and gentle release from the moment."
