What Is Wellness?
The World Health Organisation defines Wellness as:
"A state of complete physical, mental and social well being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
This definition has paved the way for the broader concept of wellness to be introduced into our approach to cancer care. The result is a more holistic approach, that targets the body, mind and spirit to help ease and treat the impact of cancer on our lives.
Wellness encompasses a number of these dimensions, including:
• Physical
• Social
• Psychological
• Spiritual
• Informational
Looking after our wellness is about ensuring that each of these dimensions is in balance.
How does the wellness approach help?
People with a cancer diagnosis often express a need to balance the medical facets of their care with the psychological and emotional aspects in order to better cope with the effects of the disease.
Patients involved in wellness programs learn new skills that help them to regain control of their lives, reduce feelings of isolation and restore hope, regardless of the stage of their disease. They become more active participants in their treatment. When treatment is completed they can use those skills for everyday life.
