heading
The Joint Austin Ludwig Oncology Unit was established with the philosophy that new cancer treatments are essential if we are to make progress in delivering the best care to people with cancer. The aim of the unit is simple: to provide the very best care to cancer patients and to conduct high quality clinical cancer research in an integrated environment. Austin Health is where research and patient care meet, providing a focus for the program.

A unique partnership between Austin Health and the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research has been forged to achieve this. Austin is responsible for providing the very latest medical care and the Institute is responsible for providing clinical research opportunities. The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research is an international organisation dedicated to the understanding and control of cancer. The Melbourne Branch operates over two campuses. The main focus for the Institute's clinical activities in Australia is at Austin Health.

Many of our clinical trials are performed under the auspices of the Cancer Vaccine Collaborative (CVC). The CVC is an international collaborative effort involving scientists and physicians from around the world who have joined together under the banner of the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) and Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (LICR).

Translational Research
The purpose of the Austin Health program is to perform "translational research" which involves taking scientific discoveries made in Institute laboratories worldwide and translating these into new clinical cancer treatments.

The Joint Oncology Unit performs clinical trials sponsored by the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, particularly in the area of immunotherapy of cancer. A large number of other clinical research projects are also being conducted in the unit for both national and international collaborative trials. These include phase one, two and three studies. Most cancer types are covered by these trials / protocols, particularly colorectal, breast, lung, gastric, melanoma, prostate, lymphoma, hepatocellular carcinoma and others. These trials evaluate new chemotherapy drugs, new hormonal therapies, and combination chemo-radiotherapy.
